Canada’s Premiers want more control over immigration like Quebec
The leaders of Canada’s provinces met in Winnipeg this week to discuss shared priorities.
The Premiers highlighted some areas that require urgent action. Three of these areas are linked closely to immigration.
Building a strong labour force;
Improving health care;
Addressing housing needs
Canada expands work permit agreement with the United Kingdom
Today, Canada and the United Kingdom announced the signing of a new Canada-United Kingdom (UK) Youth Mobility Arrangement.
Anticipated to take effect in 2024, the new arrangement includes a number of improvements on the existing youth mobility agreement between the two countries:
Agriculture and agri-food occupations for category-based Express Entry draws
On May 31st, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) was launching category-based selection draws for Express Entry candidates.
IRCC will give preference to Express Entry candidates who have a strong French language proficiency or work experience in the following fields:
Healthcare, Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions, Trades, such as carpenters, plumbers, and contractors, Transport, Agriculture and agri-food
Canadian government announces continued immigration support for Hong Kong residents in Canada
Today, the Canadian government made an announcement on the continued immigration support for Hong Kong residents in Canada. In 2021, IRCC created two pathways to permanent residence for Hong Kong residents who have either worked or studied in Canada. Stream A has been open to former Hong Kong residents who have graduated from a post-secondary learning institution in Canada within the last 3 years.
Canada unveils first-ever Tech Talent Strategy
On June 27th, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced measures that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will be implementing to attract global tech talent to Canada.These measures are referred to as Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy.
